Why nerds are unpopulair

I think most of it is right for American schools. However at my school(in the Netherlands) there is a complete different culture. I'm at a pre-universtity highschool called (gymnasium) and have some nerd qualities. I my class nobody has ever been really bullied(some teasing between friends, making fun of each other) and almost everyone is respected.

Please discuss the article and tell me about your school's culture.

nerds and geeks( and im proud to one of them FYI) is because we dont fit the type or quota they have and because your different they pick on you and its just because there jerks inseccure jerks

Nerds are unpopular because other people pick on them because they just don't want to admit that the nerds are smarter than them (NERDS FTW!)

In my school, its basiclly ruled by jocks. If you live in Ohio, football is a way of life. However, if you play at least one sport, you're cool (Tennis, all the way!) And if people pick on you because they play football, and you play tennis, its because they're all jealous.

Heh heh heh... Too many people judge nerds as smart people that will do better than them in life, so they have to pick on them so that they feel better about themselves. It's time to make people use the word 'nerd' as a compliment instead of an insult.

whoa this is turning into a , darn i forget the word..... but FIGHT THE POWER!! *takes a deep breath* okay now thats over.......jock and popular people = jerks and your right they just make fun of us to make them selves feel better and that helps them forget that they have problems

Mostly it's the arrogance of people. People judging others instead of accepting them for who they are. It happens for every group, which is why there are labels. "Nerds" are just another ignorant grouping. Plus most people like to pick on others to make themselves feel better, which only makes them into worse people.

Not so True. I Am A Nerd, And Extremely Smart. The Problem Is That I Haven't Had Much Experience Socializing With People (Thats A Completely Different Story, No Need To Type About It Here) But Now I Am Doing Everything I Can To Not Only Stay Smart But Become More Social - Maybe Not Exactly Popular, But That Will Be An Effect Of Being More Social Whether I Want It Or Not.

I don't call myself a nerd... But I'm not popular too...
I'm not very smart and I don't love school... but I like it...
I don't want to be "cool", but being popular from the right reasons is fine...
OK, now for the question, "nerds" are anpopular or because they don't want to be "cool" (I mean "cool" as being good at sports are just being mean to "nerds"), or they just don't know how to social... (Like me, I guess)...
But I don't want to be cool too, so it doesn't matter anyway...
I think that D - mente meant that nerds are unpopular because they don't want to behave like the popular people... Not because they don't want to have friends...
Anyway, anyone can be popular if he really wants to...

The essay I posted indeeds states that. But I guess most people thought it was too long to read.

My question to you: Would you rather trade with someone who has a "normal" intelligence but is very populair?
People saying yes have a bigger desire to be populair than nerds, so nerds don't want to be populair enough. That's what is stated by the essay.

Uh, you got that quote about making fun of nerds wrong. It's often mistaken for Bill Gates's quote, but I believe it's not. I read a little bit about nerds and that tidbit of info was included.

Nerds are unpopular because society keeps telling them that they should be some computer freak outcasts that do nothing more than study and play games and have no girlfriends or get laid and well,the list goes on forever.The point is,that people tell you this so much that you actually believe it and accept it so one day you look at yourself in the mirror and say"hey,i'm a nerd,i'm unpopular and unwanted and there is nothing i can do about it"but that is bullshit(yes i said bullshit).You fell for it and now you think you are a nerd and there goes your social life,is your fault.You are unpopular because you want to be unpopular,not because you are a nerd.
The thing is that Nerd and Popular are stereotypes that some jackass somewhere came up with and is idiotic to live life trying to fit in one or the other.If you are to worried about what others think about you or want you to be or think that you should be then you are a slave to people that probably don't give a dam about you anyways.So just be yourself, whatever that is,and be happy and dam proud about it.

im proud to be who God made me. and i dont care what people say im proud to a nerd and or geek! in 6th grade before i went in to home scholling i sat at the nerds table and we had a great time every day! and then when i went into home school my friend tyler (who is made fun of alot because of his stuttering) tried to kill him self becuase i wasn't gonna be in public schools and his girlfriend dumped him but he's allright now. that just shows how much bulling affects people

Pop/Hip Hop/Rap/R&B music makes you popular

I hang out with people that just love Rock Music
Goths, Emos, Punks, Skaters, and Me
I am one of them
(I am pretty damn good at hiding that I am a nerd)

It's all about what you got coming out of your headphones
And how well you can hide being a nerd ^_^

For one half of my year at school, anyone that likes rap/R&B/hip-hop is cool. For the other half, anyone that likes rap/R&B/hip-hop is a d*ckhead.

no you can't hide who you are (well you can but its not good) you are who you are
and you shouldn't try to add to that. the popular guys and girls they are the one dumb ine because they think thats all they need when they will probally end up smoking pot and getting ither people pregant(not to get rude) but thats what happens then their life goes down the toilet.
