as you know, there are a bucnh of genres that you can select when you post your game. But I think two genres should be added, in addition to arcade, shooter, RPG, and the like: Horror and 3D. 3D isn't really a genre, but neither is Utility.Anyway, I think this would allow people to narrow down their searches.

Another good Idea would be allowing the person who posts the game to check a 3D box, and also check one when searching, and only 3D games would come up.

But definitely add a Horror genre. It would be useful.

Check out our rock comedy band, Pit O' Bodies! Were missing our bassist, and the recording quality is bad, especially since the vocalist has no mic.

Perhaps also a Builder, right now most of them are in strategy. What it basically is for games like a tycoon game or city building game or something along those lines, for those people (including me) who just want to look for that kind of game. I even made one myself awhile ago.

You can say or do anything you want, but it won't necessarily be true or legal.

Horror isn't a game genre, it's an atmospheric genre. Game genres involve what you have to do in a game; that's why there are categories like "RPG", "Platform", "Puzzle", etc. "Utility" is a good genre/category because it describes what you do with the game (things that are more characteristic of applications).

A 3d category could be catastrophic because it could encourage people to make more 3d games just for the sake of their being 3d. And we don't need any more click-the-3d-ball games ;)

It's been brought up a number of times already, but I'd like to see an educational games category. I think most would agree that educational games have a unique character (because of their unique goal), and that they appeal to a distinct base.

Some people avoid educational games precisely because they don't want that kind of fun, and others go looking for it specifically.

As a side note, I also wish that games didn't have to be boxed in one category alone. Some games straddle two or more categories.

@Galctic Chimp: don't expect people to play them though, u also can not force people to play your games or educational games, but it would make the site more viewed and popular, I'll be the strategist for this site and soon we will have it running like a tycoon.

It would be a bad idea to let people place their game into more then 1 genre - that system is easily abused by people who only want others to look at their game. They could easily fit their game into every single category (or into categories it isn't) so that it takes up more space then it should.

I know, and I agree. I guess this is one of those things that could only work on in a utopia.

I certainly wouldn't expect everyone to play educational games, any more than I would expect everyone to play RPGs, real-time strategy, or card games. That's the entire point. If everyone wanted to play educational games then they may as well just be mixed in with the rest, but it's precisely because educational games draw a unique audience that I would want them to be separated out in their own category.
P.S. Best wishes when you submit your resume to YoYo ;^)

Take into note that "Platformer" isnt a genre. Its a P. O. V. (Point of view). Platformer, Top down, Isometric, and 2/3 view are all points of view. Utility IS a genre, because it's stating a type of gameplay (I don't think gameplay is the right word...)

I wouldn't worry too much about missing genre's, there are always other ones that your game will fit into. Probably :P

And yes, selecting more than one genre would help a lot.

I like to make games, and at the moment my current project is "Halfling's Quest".

oh, please I think I know what a platformer is and it is a genre and one of the most popular genres, seen in games like:
1.Mario
2.Donkey Kong
3.Super Wario 64(a 3d platformer game on the wii)
4.Super Mario 64
5.Donkey Kong 64
6.Banjo Kazooie
7.Pacman(1, 2, 3 the 3d classical adventure games which can be played on xbox)
8.Rayman
9.Donkey Kong(The Original Classic where mario jumps barrells that donkey kong tosses down and mario tries to save princess peach)
10.Super Mario
11.Super Mario Bros
12.Super Mario Galaxy
13.Mario Vs Donkey Kong
14.Mario Vs Donkey Kong 2 the march of the minis
15.MegaMan
16.MegaMan 64
17.Mario RPG
18.Super Mario Bros DS
19.Super Princess Peach
so if any of those aren't platformers in any way just what are they does the term platformer ring bell 4 ya, so just what are they exactly then, if they aren't platformer style games. A shooter is clearly a genre, for example side scrolling shooters and FPS(First Person Shooter), TPS(Third Person Shooter), side scrolling shooters can be either vertical, or horizontal, or in a never before used way lengthwise, or a combination of horizontal and lengthwise or all of the above.

Arcade, Adventure, RPG, Shooter. Those are genres. I wasn't trying to insult you anyways.
