i can't be bothered signing up to the GMC, i might, one day.
sometimes reading spam is fun, what if everyone on the forums was dead serious
all the time, spamming lightens the mood, unless you don't understand what they
are getting at, then it's just useless
EDIT: you probably have only about 25 posts because you hardly come to the
forums.

Yeah.. that's a good point I guess. But to be honest, noone seems to do anything
about it.. I guess there are bigger things to worry about. After all, the point
of these forums was probably to collaberate with other users. Which is basically

Bingo! Your response mde me go back and re-check something.
Indeed I did set the variable in the instance creation, but... I also discovered
a left-over, I had mistakenly left it attached to a title sprite/object. I did
this in early development. Jeesh...

well you can use manual drawing... though I wouldn't recommend it ><
what you mean that it returns to the initialized value??
I think you initialize it at the wrong place then.. this should happen in the
"instance creation" event.. or maybe the room_creation event (since it is a
global variable - if spawn multiple instances later on the game, this would mess
up the variable and reinitialize it..)..
Just put all drawing related functions in the draw event, but put all other
calculations outside it!

Thanks Paul... A couple of salient points.
1. I want to Draw my variable onto the screen as this is my shot counter. This
means I need to update the variable and draw the updates on the screen.
2. When I use a Draw Event to change the displayed value, it appears it does
change (I saw it decrement by 1), but then changes back to initialized value
when I leave that Draw Event.
Let me ask you this... Can you display the value of a global variable using
draw_text cmd? This is pure GML. One should not need a Draw Event to do this?
Can you see it in your game in the room?
